BIRDWATCHING IN ESPÍRITO SANTO

LINHARES

(REGÊNCIA, FAZENDA CUPIDO & REFÚGIO, VALE NATURAL RESERVE)

BIRDWATCHING LOCATIONS AND CONTACT WITH NATURE

Linhares is a county in Espírito Santo, with just over 160,000 inhabitants (IBGE, 2015). Today, Linhares is the main northern city of ES and considered one of the most important cities for investments. In addition to its great economic potential, Linhares has much more to offer: Nature. Why? The city has a large concentration of lakes, sandbanks, preserved remnants of Atlantic Forest with bromeliads and endemic orchids. In our opinion, Linhares is one of the richest places on earth in terms of biodiversity! Linhares is rich in historical, cultural, gastronomic attractions and has great potential for ecoturism. Among these attractions are the Juparanã Lagoon Resort of Ipiranga do Pontal, the Vale Natural Reserve, the National Forest Goytacazes, the lagoon 'Lagoa Nova', Regência and much, much more!

REGÊNCIA

The village Regência, at the mouth of the Doce River

Regência is a small village located at the mouth of the Doce River. Regência is a district in the city Linhares in Espírito Santo, Brazil. The region has recently been suffering from the environmental tragedy caused by the disruption of the Samarco mining dam. Nevertheless, it is a region worth visiting for its wide variety of shorebirds. With your visit, you will be contributing to the maintenance of the local economy, severely affected by the tragedy.
The dirt road to the village is characterized by pastures on both sides, with small shrubs growing here and there. Regência is not only famous for its birds that inhabit the beaches. Its main attraction are the waves, perfect for surfing, the Festa de Caboclo Bernardo, meeting of congo bands from all of Espírito Santo, the traditional Festa dos Pescadores de Regência and the TAMAR Project.

FAZENDA CUPIDO & REFÚGIO

Private reserve respecting wildlife and biodiversity, home of the red-billed curassow

The Fazenda Cupido & Refúgio is a protected area with 180 hectares, that din't need to become a conservation unit in order to preserve its biodiversity. More than 60% of the area consist of Atlantic Forests. At the Fazenda work is done in a sustainable way. Its main products are cocoa, rubber trees and other fruit trees. Its lush vegetation and rich wildlife allow the fazenda to practice ecoturism. Many of the species that can be found here are threatened by extinction, like the red-billed curassow, the harpy eagle, the jaguar and the lowland tapir.

VALE NATURAL RESERVE

The Vale Natural Reserve is not protected by environmental law, therefore, it is not considered a conservation unit. However, the area is being protected by the Vale Company.

The Vale Natural Reserve is one of Brazil's largest areas of protected Atlantic Forest. It has 23 hectares and was founded in 1955 by acquiring various small private properties. In 2008, the UNESCO granted the title Biosphere Reserve of the Atlantic Forest, because of its importance for the conservation of fauna and flora. Since the start of its operations, the reserve has cataloged thousands of plant and animal species, with birds representing about 20% Brazil's overall bird species, a prime destination for birdwatching. Another highlight are the big cat species. It is the home of Espírito Santo's last wild jaguars, which are being studied by the Feline Project, an initiative that plays an important role in the conservation of jaguars.
